MUMMERS PARADE

The Mummers Parade started in St. John’s in 2009. Mummering can be traced back in Newfoundland back to the 19th Century. Around the first weekend in December, people dressed up in colorful disguises, wearing as outerwear oversized underwear, huge bras, lampshades, hobby horse costumes, with faces all covered joining in a scheduled parade around a specific route in downtown. Music, recitation, noises , ugly sticks, drums and dancing, all along the way. It was a great attraction every year, snow or no snow, cold or freezing cold, the crowd pushed on greeted by rows and rows of spectators. Over the years, the parade and event has grown into a week of festivities to highlight the century old mummering tradition.

This is Covid-19 year. Needless to say, only a virtual Mummers parade was held and organized in St. John’s.

For this reason, I have gathered some pictures from past Mummers Parade in St. John’s to share with you here. It is fun-filled and absolutely hilarious. Hope you will like them and have an idea what a Mummer’s Parade would be like. #Mummers #MummersParade
